A sample of a leaving school certificate dated
1944.
A child had to be 14 years of age before being sent out by the Direction of Labour
to start work.
No fancy paperwork then but that report had to be shown to the prospective employer.
Nowadays, it would be regarded more as a letter of personal reference than a certificate.

Maisie Johnson has attended the above school for nearly four years. Her conduct is
excellent and she is of more than average intelligence.
She is very good at Arithmetic and English and takes a great interest in all subjects.
She is the top girl in the school and is most sensible and helpful. She is thoroughly
trustworthy and honest. She is energetic and will take pains. She will do very good
work and will repay any training.
She takes a great interest in things that are happening and thinks about them intelligently.
I wish her every success and recommend her with every confidence.
